  PD Dr Michael S. Krzemnicki is director at the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF, internationally reputed as leading laboratory for the testing of coloured stones, diamonds and pearls.

  Apart from working at the SSEF since more than 20 years, he is lecturer at the University Basel and is supervising gemmology-related research projects in collaboration with Swiss universities and international research facilities. Furthermore, he is appointed member of the Scientific Board of the Swiss Gemmological Society SGS, of the Executive Board of the International Gemmological Conference IGC, member of the HKTDC Technical Board for the standardization of Fei Cui (Jadeite) testing and other technical and editorial boards.

  As an internationally renowned expert he is frequent speaker at gemmological conferences worldwide and has published numerous articles in scientific and trade journals on gems, pearls, and new analytical testing methods.

  Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF

  The Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF is a non-profit Swiss foundation whose first aim is to provide the international trade with gem testing services for coloured stones, diamonds and pearls at highest level of excellence and reliability.

  Apart from gem testing, the mission of SSEF is to further the science of gemstone testing by pioneering gemmological research and to offer state-of-the-art gemmological education from basic to scientific level to the Swiss and international trade.

  As a leading gemmological laboratory, many of the most prestigious and exceptional gems and jewellery sold today in the market come with an SSEF report, usually issued in English, but with options in French, German, or Chinese too.

  Our laboratory gemmologists all have a scientific and gemmological education and work on a high level of experience and integrity. In combination with our advanced laboratory equipment, this ensures that the authenticity of gemstones and pearls, possible treatments, and their origins, can be tested at SSEF in the most scientific and reproducible manner.

  Founded in 1974 by Swiss trade organisations, the SSEF comes under the aegis of the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs and is supervised by a Foundation Board. Already recognised in 1978 by the World Jewellery Confederation – CIBJO, the SSEF is also a member of the International Colored Stone Association – ICA, and founding member of the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC). Since 2009, the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF is directed by PD Dr. M.S. Krzemnicki.
